Though stereotypically, otakus look like some underdog camera man the cool ones since the 00's looked like a throw between popular, counter and geek cultures. Though this is mainly what non-otakus think!
Made To Entertain, Even If Unofficial
AMVs used to be a passion of production in the 90's that otakus did for fun as much as fan-fiction and fan-art and even cosplay. The casual Otaku is very nit picky when it comes to AMVs or anything fan-made since if it doesn't look inspired or look professional then its either average or skippable. Stick with the theme or show it to your buds as few other people would care to see it.
Buy It, Train and Conquer
Casual otakus are commonly known to have a large sword collection, they generally don't do guns unless they are anime related. Casual otakus believe that home defense is also important so they take learning to use their weapon seriously in case of invaders. Sometimes just for the hell of it and because they have spare swords they like to engage their friends in sword duels mostly to display their skill with the blade, the better they are the more they conquer the honor to be respected as a sword master.
Real Animes Have No Need For Fanfare
Many of the best animes have really good plots, really deep characters, really good art direction, really intellectual atmosphere and very much fitting themes! The casual otaku can always judge the good from the mediocre when it comes to anime, cosplay, anime games or even Japanese artists!
What's Your Costume This Halloween, Movie Premiere or Special Event?
Casual otakus don't do costumes for the hell of it, they usually do it because they want to, that isn't an everyday thing. When its Halloween, a big movie premiere is coming, the local convention is coming soon or they are going to a costume party the cosplay is totally worth it.
Why Look Run of the Mill? Why Not Look Different
Anime is cool to look at with the artists blending many wacky ideas and imaginations into one toon, but spending every day waking up looking like everyone in public isn't cool. Casual otakus believe they can make anime style look like every day get up making them feel like the person they wish to be, that cool, badass or hot anime character they envision being. It will always be the hairstyle they request from a hair parlor stylist and often the clothing they wear for big or special events.
If You Really Loved Anime
Casual otakus don't believe its enough to just have a pin board collection of anime pictures, watch anime or dress out in anime, if your a true otaku you would collect every bit of anime! Having a whole plastic drawer set dedicated to anime is what casual otakus believe is a true testament to anime fandom and love.
